Pender Island or "the Penders" are the second most populous of the southern Gulf Islands (after Salt Spring) with around 2,000 inhabitants. Usually referred to as one island, there are actually two islands (North and South) joined by a short bridge. Most of the real estate development on the islands is on North Pender and the majority of the population lives there as well. Climate is a comfortable sub-Mediterranean and the landscape features rural farmland, rolling hills and several lakes. There is one main centre for shopping known as Driftwood Centre. The centre has a post office, grocery store, liquor store, etc... The island can be reached via ferry from Swartz Bay or Tsawwassen or float plane service.
